Nearly 3 million people have been affected by the heavy rains, strong winds and flooding caused by Cyclone Idai, and as of April 15 the death toll has risen above 1,000. More than 4,000 cases of cholera, diarrhea and malaria have been reported, and at least 200,000 people are currently displaced and living in makeshift camps and temporary shelters such as schools. Additionally, more than 400,000 hectares of crops have been destroyed.
Partnering with the Brethren in Christ church, MCC will provide 403 flood-affected and displaced families in Malawi with two months of food assistance, a tarp, a pail and MCC material resources. A prior planned shipment including blankets, soap, hygiene kits, school kits, relief kits and canned meat will be reallocated to flood-affected households. In Mozambique, MCC and the Brethren in Christ church will provide one month of food assistance to 280 families. MCC is also partnering with the Association of Assistance for Orphaned Children to provide one month of food assistance to 450 cyclone and flood-affected families. MCC and the Christian Council of Mozambique are also partnering to provide one month of food assistance to 400 cyclone-affected families.
